What Are Compression Socks?
Only the best thing to happen to your feet and legs, but we may be a little biased! Compression socks (or compression stockings as they’re sometimes referred to in medical circles) are kind of like socks on steroids, but in the best way. Tighter at the foot and ankle and looser at the top, these socks use graduation to gently massage your muscles to help keep the blood from pooling in your feet. So you could call them anti-gravity socks, or maybe just the superheroes of the sock world!
How Do Compression Socks Work?
The easy answer is that compression socks help push the blood back up your leg.
A more detailed answer is that they use a system of graduated pressure measured in millimeters of Mercury, or mmHg. The higher the number, the stronger the compression. The compression is tightest at the toe, foot or ankle and decreases to a looser fit up the length of the sock. The pressure caused by this graduation reduces the size of veins, which amazingly enough, allows more blood to travel through them. The blood flows more easily up toward the heart and doesn’t get stuck in superficial veins. This gives you a better supply and flow of oxygenated blood and can reduce swelling and pain and help prevent blood clots.
